Humble Beginnings
Long ago, a deep and personal love for the Western Cape: its fynbos-covered mountains, its long white beaches, the particular quality of its light, gave rise to a simple conviction: that the people who travel to these places deserve to stay somewhere that truly honours them.
Not somewhere that could be anywhere. Not somewhere built to a brand standard with no relationship to the landscape around it. Somewhere that earns its setting.
That conviction became Cape Summer Boutique Collection. And Cape Summer Boutique Collection, as it grew and its vision became clearer, became Raw Africa Collection.
What Raw Means to Us
The word raw isn’t accidental.
In a hospitality industry that often mistakes polish for excellence, we wanted something different. Raw means quiet luxury, the kind that doesn’t announce itself.
It means authenticity over artifice: the indigenous garden over the manicured lawn, the solar panel over the generator, the natural material over the synthetic one. It means a love of Africa’s natural world that goes beyond putting a photograph of it above the bed.
Raw Africa Collection is not trying to be the loudest name in South African boutique travel. We are trying to be the most honest ones.
How the Collection Grew
Over the past decade, eight properties joined a collection built around one question: Does this place earn its setting?
Sky Villa
In Plettenberg Bay, Sky Villa Boutique Hotel rose on a hilltop above Baron Estate. A passion project of the highest order, 360-degree views over the ocean and Keurbooms Lagoon, striking design, warm hospitality, and five-star facilities, it went on to be crowned Provincial Winner in the 5-Star Boutique Hotel category at the Lilizela Tourism Awards, South Africa’s premier tourism recognition.
It remains the flagship of the collection: the property that most completely realises what Raw Africa set out to be.
The Bungalow
On the beach below, The Bungalow, Plett took its place directly on Hobie Beach, a different register entirely. Where Sky Villa reaches upward, The Bungalow leans into the sand.
An oceanfront restaurant with panoramic views, ancient milkwood trees overhead, dolphins in the warm Indian Ocean beyond the windows, and rooms designed to feel like a home rather than a hotel.
The Bungalow was recognised as a Lilizela Award finalist in the 5-Star Bed & Breakfast category and has since become one of the Garden Route’s most sought-after properties for weddings, getaways and family holidays.
Spanish Farm
In Somerset West, Spanish Farm Guest Lodge occupies a 4-hectare estate on the slopes of the Helderberg, twenty minutes from Cape Town International Airport and, atmospherically, considerably further.
The lodge and its villas look out across False Bay and the surrounding mountains, framed by indigenous gardens of fynbos, proteas and silver trees that have won recognition in their own right.
Spanish Farm is the collection’s most committed expression of low-impact hospitality: solar power, earth-friendly bath products, gardens that belong to the fynbos biome rather than simply decorating it. The property has been frequently nominated in the Lilizela 5-Star Self-Catering category.
Pringle Bay Villa
Along the Overberg coast, Pringle Bay Villa sits on the long white beach of Pringle Bay, an hour from Cape Town. Table Mountain stands on the horizon. Whales move through the bay. A natural stream runs through the indigenous garden to the rim-flow pool, and an outdoor bath looks out at a view few places in the world can match. The villa accommodates up to eight guests across four en-suite bedrooms, a home, not a hotel, in every sense.
Oubaai Villa
In the Oubaai Golf Estate above George, Oubaai Villa floats above the treeline. The Outeniqua Mountains fill one horizon; the Gwaiing River gorge fills another. The only sounds are birdsong and, if the conditions are right, a fish eagle. It is the collection’s most private property and, for the guests who find it, among the most memorable.
22 Eikehoff Apartment
In Stellenbosch, South Africa’s great university town, its wine capital, its cultural heart, the collection settled into two very different properties. 22 Eikehoff Apartment offers stylish self-catering winelands living: a fully equipped kitchen, a balcony with braai facilities, and walking-distance access to restaurants, wine farms and museums.

Every property in the Raw Africa Collection was chosen because it already had something that a building programme cannot create: an exceptional position, a particular relationship between its architecture and its landscape, a quality of quiet that guests feel the moment they arrive. Our role is to find those places, refine them, and make sure the experience inside matches what lies outside the window.
We take the natural world seriously.
The Western Cape’s fynbos, its whale-watched bays, its milkwood forests and its mountain views are not the backdrop to a stay with Raw Africa; they are the reason for it. For that reason, we make choices that reflect their value. Organic fibres throughout the collection.
Green amenities as standard. Solar-powered operations and earth-friendly bath products, where possible. Indigenous gardens are maintained for their ecosystems, not their appearance. Responsible tourism is not a marketing position for us. It is a basic acknowledgement that the landscapes our guests come to experience deserve to be here long after they leave.
We believe small is better.
